Additional Information : This original Lithograph is Hand Signed in pencil by the artist ‘O. Zadkine’ at the lower right corner.
It is also Hand Numbered in pencil 8/350 at the lower left corner.
The work is furthermore signed in the plate by the artist.
This lithograph was printed in 1960 in a limited edition of only 350 impressions as part of the series "Les Traveaux d'Hercule" (Die Arbeiten des Herakles) that was illustarated with 28 diffirent original lithographs by Zadkine to the myth of Euripides.
The work was published by Christopher Czwiklitzer in Koln, Germany.
This lithograph illustrates the Mares of Diomedes that according the the Greek Mythology were four man-eating horses. Magnificent, wild, and uncontrollable, they belonged to the giant Diomedes, king of Thrace, a son of Ares and Cyrene who lived on the shores of the Black Sea. Bucephalus, Alexander the Great's horse, was said to be descended from these mares.
In the eighth labour of Heracles, he was to steal the Mares from Diomedes.
