Note: Around 1957 Steinhardt returns to his earlier imagery. In this period he revisits themes he explored in his youth and transforms them using the newer graphic media of woodcuts which allows him to return to the sharp black and white contrasts of his early woodcuts and etchings. This trend can be seen in our work (Earthquake) which is so close to his early style that one is almost tempted to place it among the works of the Pathetiker period. It takes up in fact both the style and the subject matter of that period, and it may actually have been produced in lieu of a lost etching , Earthquake of 1913 or in memory of a lost woodcut.
