Technique: Original Hand Signed Unique Monotype in Colours on Japan Nacré Paper

Additional Information: This monotype in colours is hand signed in black ink by the artist “Marc Chagall” in the lower left image.

The work was realized by Jacques Frelaut in 1965. This work is a unique piece.

Chagall created a total of 308 unique monotypes throughout his lifetime.

Note: Marc Chagall began to produce monotypes only when Gerald Cramer, his Swiss publisher at the time suggested it to him in the late 1950’s. From that point, Chagall worked with Cramer and the printer Jacques Frelaut to produce an outstanding group of etchings, aquatints, woodcuts and monotypes including our work ” Les amoureux aux coucher du soleil “.

In fact, an exhibition of examples from that body of works was presented at the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art) in New York between November 1979 and January 1980. Riva Castlemain, Director of the Department of Prints and Illustrated Books at the MOMA, interestingly noted at the time that, “This exhibition is about the creative interaction of three devoted people”.

Ralph Ehrmann (1925-2023).

Ralph Ehrmann was born in Leipzig to a Jewish family. In 1933 the family emigrated to England due to the raise of Nazism in Germany.

During the second second world war he volunteered as a pilot for the RAF.

He became Executive Director of Airfix, a small toy manufactor and have made it one of the most succesfull toy manufactors in the UK specializing in model planes essembly kits.

The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by the Comite Chagall in Paris and is accompained by their certificate of authenticity.

Condition: Very good condition. The upper and lower sheet edges folded horizontally. A pale band of mount staining at the extreme sheet edges. Remnants of hinging tape, verso.
