Note: In the summer of 1931, between 21st May and the end of July, the artist undertook a long tour of Southern France, arriving to the small seaside town of Hendaye at the beginning of June.
In a letter to his friend Walter Minnich in Switzerland, Pechstein explains that he has quickly sketched this scene due to the precarious nature of the vista – he dared not paint in situ on a larger scale.
The view is from a slope with crossed by tram tracks. Therefore the gouache was painted by Pechstein from the preliminary sketch in a safer environment.
