Gilden’s Art Gallery is delighted to present Joie de vivre – an exhibition celebrating the joys of living through the medium of entertainment. Focussing on the changing sources of amusement throughout the 20th Century. We are pleased to present an eclectic selection of works on paper comprising original prints, paintings and drawings across six main themes from more than forty artists. We begin by exploring the role of music and musicians as a source of inspiration to many diverse artists of the 20th Century. Music is naturally followed by the power of dance and the celebration of movement. The enthusiasm for both music and dance are brought together in the burgeoning nightlife of cabaret clubs, music halls and bars. Aside from the bright lights of the city, the seasonal thrill of the travelling circus and its performers enthral all generations. The itinerant big top and its retinue of circus troupes move to another arena spectacular – the bullfight. Exhilarating battles between man and beast play out to the wishes of the audience. Finally, we observe the more genteel and relaxing past times of sports and leisure.
Gilden’s Art Gallery is delighted to present our new exhibition – Italy Uncovered – offering a survey of both the major Italian art movements and those which are lesser known. We begin our focus on the most celebrated movement of Italian twentieth-century art – Futurism. This involved the exploration of not only motion but also the rapidly advancing industrialization of the world.
This leads to a diverse exploration of Metaphysical Art and Surrealism, which were two movements undertaken in the same period between the World Wars.
Like much of the wider western world the decades following the Second World War also saw Italian artists looking outside of their national sphere and embracing international movements. We are pleased to show a number of works belonging to the International movements of Abstraction and Minimalism.
One of the unique qualities of the Italian artistic movements of the twentieth century is that there is no one dominant region or centre for creativity, but rather pockets of innovation, schools of thought and manifestos that emerged from right across the country.
Gilden’s Art Gallery are delighted, in collaboration with Gordon Cooke, to present for the first time in
Hampstead a selection of important etchings and lithographs by John Copley and his wife Ethel Gabain. The
selected highlights are direct from the estates of the artists and are returning to Hampstead, their long-time
home, for this special exhibition. It is the first time since 1985 that there has been a joint show dedicated to
their work and we are privileged to present these original prints a stone’s throw away from their marital home
of 10 Hampstead Square.
Hampstead was often a source of subjects for them as well as where they lived and worked in their studios for
over 30 years. An Autumn Afternoon on Hampstead Heath is one of John Copley’s most evocative etchings, and
Ethel Gabain often posed her sisters, or any other available model in their home. Ultimately she found her ideal
model in Carmen Watson who sat for both artists regularly. Ethel Gabain’s sympathetic studies of young women
have stimulated a revival of interest in her work in recent years.
We look forward to welcoming you in our gallery to discover more about these talented artists.
We are delighted to present an exhibition of important works by Alexander Calder and Sam Francis in the context of the promotion of American Abstraction.
A deep immersion in the most brilliant minds of the 20th Century.
