Title: Sleeping – Double Portrait Martha Liebermann | Schlafende – Zwei studien von Martha Libermann, ca. 1895-1900

Technique: Stamp Signed Pen and Ink Drawing on Watermarked Wove Paper

Size: 18 x 11.5 cm. / 7 x 4.5 in.

Additional Information: This pen and ink drawing by Max Liebermann is stamp signed in black ink “MLiebermann” in the centre right of the image.
This is the stamp of the Liebermann estate and therefore suggests the work was in the possession of the artist until his death in 1935

The estate of the artist.
Private German Collection.
The authenticity of this work has been verbally confirmed by Dr. Margreet Nouwen from the Max Liebermann Archive, Berlin.

Condition: Very good condition. The paper bears a central crease from before the artist used it. Minor

Technique: Original Hand Signed Lithograph on Laid Paper with partial Fleur-de-lis Crest Watermark

Paper size: 28.3 x 22 cm. / 11.2 x 8.7 in.

Additional Information: This original lithograph is hand signed in pencil by the artist “MLiebermann” in the lower right corner.
It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 150, in the lower left corner.
It was included in the second “Jahrbuch der Original-Graphik” published in 1920 alongside nine other compositions by various artists including Max Slevogt.
The lithograph is in its original portfolio slipcase.

Condition: Excellent condition.

Technique: Original Hand Signed and Numbered Etching and Drypoint on Wove Paper

Paper size: 35 x 25.5 cm. / 13.8 x 10 in.
Image size: 9 x 10.5 cm. / 3.5 x 14.1 in.

Additional Information: This original etching and drypoint is hand signed by the artist “MLiebermann” in the lower right corner.
It is also hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 100, at the lower left corner.

Technique: Original Hand Signed Drypoint on JW Zanders Wove Paper

Paper size: 44.5 x 30.5 cm. / 17.5 x 12 in.

Additional Information: This original drypoint is hand signed in pencil “MLiebermann” at the lower right margin.
It is unnumbered (as issued) from the edition of 260.
The drypoint was produced for the book “Max Liebermann zu Hause” [Max Liebermann at Home], which documented the artist’s home life.
The paper bears the JW Zander 1916 watermark along the right margin.
Note: The young woman is the artist’s daughter Kathe with her daughter Maria who was born in 1917. The child’s development was documented in many lithographs by Liebermann.

Technique: Signed Charcoal Drawing on Wove Paper

Size: 47.4 x 31.5 cm. / 18.7 x 12.4 in.

Additional Information: This charcoal drawing by Max Liebermann is signed in charcoal by the artist “MLiebermann” in the lower right of the image.

Provenance:
The authenticity of this work has been verbally confirmed by Dr. Margreet Nouwen from the Max Liebermann Archive, Berlin.

Condition: Very good condition. An area of staining at the lower right corner. The sheet toned and with the residue of charcoal. Soft creasing along the lower sheet edge. Remnants of hinging tape in at the upper sheet edge with associated skinning, verso.

Plate Size: 13.5 x 16 cm / 5.5 x 6.2 in

Additional Information: This work is Hand Signed by the artist in pencil “M.Liebermann” at the lower right margin.
It is an original Etching printed by Liebermann in 1893.
This work is from the first state out of two.
The back side of the paper bears the inventory stamp of the “Kunsthistorische Museum, Rostock. Inv. No. K 1588 g”

Provenance:
1. Property of the Burkamp Collection, Rostock.
Stored at the Kunsthistorische Museum, Rostock, later appropriated by the German Democratic Republic and restituted to heir of the Burkamp Collection.
2. Christie’s London.
