Gilden’s Art Gallery is delighted to present a series of works on paper from the Modern Master, Marc Chagall (1887-1985). This exhibition tells the story of the people, places and themes which inspired Chagall across each decade of his artistic life. The role of books, periodicals and art reviews are wonderfully illustrated by examples spanning several decades. The unquestionable importance of art review and periodicals to the dissemination of 20th Century art is highlighted through Chagall’s collaboration with Aimé Maeght and Efstratios Tériade’ in the publications ‘Derrière le miroir’ and ‘Verve’, respectively. A highlight of this exhibition is an exceptional impression from Chagall’s celebrated series ‘Circus’ from 1967. The vibrancy of the colours demonstrate why Pablo Picasso once quipped “When Matisse dies, Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what colour really is”. Finally, it is an honour to present a selection of works made in collaboration with Charles Sorlier, Chagall’s close friend from the Fernand Mourlot studio and who worked together for almost forty years. We will be thrilled to welcome you to view these works in our Hampstead gallery and a select number of pieces will travel internationally to be viewed in New York and Miami this Autumn.
Gilden’s Art Gallery are delighted to present our Spring exhibition for March-May 2022, ‘Inspired by Nature’. This show focuses on the beauty of the natural world and its enduring source of inspiration for artists across many genres, movements, and periods. The exhibition is divided into three distinct sections: Flora, Fauna, and Landscapes. It comprises etchings, lithographs, screenprints, archival prints, ceramic, drawings, and paintings from twenty-six artists.
We are particularly thrilled to be offering the seven striking
largescale works from Alex Katz’s most recent edition, ‘Flowers’, published in
2021. Alongside these monumental works are important examples of the role of
landscape art in German Expressionism, such as Ernst Ludwig Kirchner’s, ‘Farmer
in Mountainous Forest’, 1920 and Karl Schmidt Rottluff’s, ‘Animated Autumn
Landscape’, 1967.
We hope that you enjoy this catalogue and the exhibition
hosted in our Hampstead gallery.

Gilden’s Art Gallery are delighted to present our new exhibition “Moments in Time’. This reflective show focuses on the individual moments in time, across the history of the twentieth century, that have directly impacted the artists represented. Their names are well-known in the canon of art history, but the opportunity to place works in the context of each artist’s career and the events that surrounded the creation of individual works now has a special resonance. The selected works are either from important years of the artists’ respective careers or are directly linked to a significant moment in the lives of the artists. These works are as diverse as representing personal spaces, how artists encountered circumstances beyond their control, new landscapes, new relationships, and the impact of war.
The global pandemic has touched everyone’s lives and changed how we see our own world. In time, ‘normality’ will return, but we will each carry the impact of this period on our lives, and it will inform our future decisions as well as allow us to re-examine the past. It allows us to look again at familiar artworks and now we can connect to a perhaps a different, deeper meaning that we had not noticed before. The exhibition comprises original lithographs, etchings, woodcuts, and screenprints alongside unique works on paper by celebrated masters of 20th Century Art. A plethora of artistic movements are explored through the lens of ‘snapshots’ in time and will be available to view in our Hampstead gallery. Whilst there remain many obstacles in the world, we hope you will draw strength from the resilience of these pieces and the stories that they can tell in order to help us realise that even the pandemic will be only a moment in time.

Gilden’s Art Gallery are delighted to announce our latest exhibition focussing on the extensive printmaking career of Joan Miró. With works from the 1950s to 1970s, we have a selection of original prints from across the media of etching and aquatint, lithography and carborundum – a technique that became synonymous with Miró. Miró was a dedicated printmaker from early in his artistic career and worked with a multitude of talented printing studios, a small selection of which will be highlighted in this exhibition. We start primarily with the two largest and most established printing houses of Twentieth Century France –Mourlot and Maeght. Further to these major and respected houses, we have original prints from Miró’s longest collaborator Robert Dutrou and a selection of etchings and lithographs from the celebrated Spanish printing houses Sala Gaspar and Polígrafa.

Gilden’s Art Gallery is delighted to present Joie de vivre – an exhibition celebrating the joys of living through the medium of entertainment. Focussing on the changing sources of amusement throughout the 20th Century. We are pleased to present an eclectic selection of works on paper comprising original prints, paintings and drawings across six main themes from more than forty artists. We begin by exploring the role of music and musicians as a source of inspiration to many diverse artists of the 20th Century. Music is naturally followed by the power of dance and the celebration of movement. The enthusiasm for both music and dance are brought together in the burgeoning nightlife of cabaret clubs, music halls and bars. Aside from the bright lights of the city, the seasonal thrill of the travelling circus and its performers enthral all generations. The itinerant big top and its retinue of circus troupes move to another arena spectacular – the bullfight. Exhilarating battles between man and beast play out to the wishes of the audience. Finally, we observe the more genteel and relaxing past times of sports and leisure.
We hold three to four exhibitions each year in the field of Modern Masters works on paper and original prints. We have an on-going commitment to promote Modern Masters and are delighted to be able to offer free entrance to the public to all our exhibitions.
