This offset lithograph is hand signed and dated by the artist "Richter 69" in pencil at the lower right margin.
It is also hand numbered in pencil, from the edition of 120 in pencil at the lower left margin.
The lithograph was published by Galerie Lüpke, Frankfurt in 1969 in a limited edition of 120 signed and numbered impressions. There were a further 6 trial proofs and a few H.C proofs made.
This work was based on a photograph of Luegallee street in Düsseldorf.
Richter mounted a toy car on the window-pane through which the photograph was taken.
Note: "In 1969 Richter produced a visually enigmatic sheet: the offset print 'Car' shows a street, depicted from above, on which an open jeep is driving.
The subject is slightly blurred and thus only vaguely recognisable, although the car seems strangely model-like and seems to be hovering over the street.
With an out of focus camera lens the artist also took pictures of a glass panel, on which he had mounted a small toy car beforehand. For the photographic perspective the car thus seems to be driving on the street in front of the window. The artificially and unrealistic environment created for the jeep helps provide an illusionistic size for it. Nevertheless the car keeps a model-like and irritatingly floating character as a visual appearance, while not giving away its toy character in the picture." (Butin 2004, p. 37).
Literature: Butin, H. (2013). Catalogue Raisonné. Gerhard Richter: Editions 1965-2013. Hatje Cantz, Ostfildern-Ruit.
