The Bull and the Condor, 1962
Original Hand Signed and Numbered Lithograph on BFK Rives Wove Paper
76 x 56.5 cm. / 29.9 x 22.2 in.

It was printed by the Tamarind Lithography Workshop, Inc., Los Angeles, 1962 in a limited edition of 100 impressions. It was published by the UCLA Art Council in 1963.
The paper bears the blindstamps of the publisher and that of the master printer Emiliano Sorini in the lower left and right margins respectively.
The paper bears the BFK Rives watermark in the right margin.
Other impressions of this subject can be found in the collections of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Philadelphia, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, LACMA, Los Angeles, the Nagional Gallery of Art, Washington and the Art Institute of Chicago.

Note:
The subject of the Bull and Condor was introduced to Lipchitz through conversation with the Spanish poet Juan Larrea in the early 1930s. Larrea has recalled seeing fiestas in Peru where a battle between a Condor and Bull would be created by lashing the two animals together. Lipchitz identified this struggle between beasts, as much as those who enjoyed the spectacle, as symbolising Europe’s depressing decline into Nazism during the 1930s.

Condition: Good condition. Three tears in the left margin. Soft creasing in the margins.
