JACQUES HNIZDOVSKY Ukranian/American, 1915-1985

Seersucker, from: Flora Exotica: A Collection of Flowering Plants, 1972
Original Hand Signed, Dated, Titled and Numbered Woodcut on Tissue Paper
26.7 x 25.5 cm / 10.5 x 10 in.
This original woodcut is hand signed in pencil by the artist "Hnizdovsky" at the lower left margin.
It is titled and dated “Seersucker 1972” in the centre of the lower margin.
The woodcut is also hand numbered in pencil from the deluxe edition of 50, at the lower right margin.

Note: This subject was one of several woodcuts by Hnizdovsky illustrating the book by Gordon P. DeWolf and published by David R. Godine. A copy of which is held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
The Seersucker woodcut motif was used as one of the four plants on the front cover of the first edition of ‘Flora Exotica: A collection of Flowering Plants’, published in 1972.
The woodcut is a standalone image on page 15 opposite the historical description of the Seersucker plant (Geogenanthus Undulatus).

The subject was also submitted to the 1979 ‘A Northeast Folio’ produced to accompany an exhibition of botanical printmaking at the Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation.

Condition: Good condition. Foxing across the sheet. Creasing in the margins.
