ED RUSCHA American, b. 1937

Mr. Ray, 1975
Original Hand Signed and Numbered Lithograph in Colours on Wove Paper
Paper size: 35 x 51.5 cm. / 13.8 x 20.3 in.
This original lithograph is hand signed in pencil "Ed Ruscha", verso.
It is hand numbered in pencil from the edition of 100, verso. There were also 20 artist’s proofs aside from the standard edition, numbered with Roman numerals.
The lithograph was published by Lusciano Anselmino, Paris/Milan in 1975.
The paper bears the Anselmino blindstamp in the lower right corner.
It was included as part of the 'La Logique Assassine' [Murderous Logic] portfolio created by Luciano Anselmino to celebrate the Surrealist and Dada artist, (Man Ray 1890-1976).

Note:
From the early 1970s Ruscha began to turn away from his iconic Gas Station Americana and started making drawings and paintings of single words or short phrases placed against soft unmodulated backgrounds. They all appear as the main focal point, appealing to the artist for both their visual and phonetic forms but they also took on paradoxical resonance in isolation from their mundane contexts.
Another impression from this edition is held in the joint collections of The National Galleries of Scotland and Tate Modern, London.

Literature: Engberg, S. (1999). Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999. Minnesota: Walker Art Centr
Reference: Engberg 86

Condition: Very good condition. Pinpoint foxing across the sheet, verso not visible recto. Inky fingermarks originating in the printing process, verso.
