This India ink drawing is hand inscribed in black pencil, “The Radio General”, by the artist at the lower left image.
This work is recorded with the Grosz Estate and stamped in the lower left corner “George Grosz Nachlass 4.103.2.”, verso.

Note: This drawing was a preparatory sketch for an article in Esquire magazine written by Frank C. Hanighen, the overseas European correspondent for the New York Times and New York Evening Post during the 1930s. The article was titled ‘The Radio General’ in reference to the Franco era Spanish General Gonzalo Queipo de Llano y Sierra, who rose to prominence during the July Coup 1936 - preceding the Spanish Civil War. The general was renowned for being frequently intoxicated and taking to the airwaves to broadcast outrageous and absurd claims. A similar composition by Grosz was ultimately included in the article, published in 1st January 1938.
