Between 1st October and 24th November 1961, Oskar Kokoschka went on a journey through Greece. On this journey he travelled through the modern and ancient cities of Athens, Delphi, Olympia, Sparta, Cape Sounion and the island of Aegina. Despite the artist’s frequent travels, the impact of Greece was stronger than any of his other journeys, he recalled, “Greece is for all of us an ideal like the Garden of Eden. Why? Perhaps because it was there that man realised best what it is to be human”.
