Note: In 1922 Kandinsky accepts an invitation of Walter Gropius and joins the Bauhaus with Paul Klee. He developed the basic design course and taught the mural painting workshop. Kandinsky also worked much and experimented with colour, applying his analytical foundation and the conclusions in his teaching.
Painting was not formally part of the curriculum at the Bauhaus. Kandinsky, along with Paul Klee, taught courses aimed at giving their students a better grasp of form, colour and tone. He used techniques that resurfaced in his own work. His earliest work from the time of joining the Bauhaus is the series “Small Worlds'”. In these 12 pictures, executed in colour lithograph, woodcut and drypoint, we can see clearly the influence of the Russian artists.

Note: The Cantos are a collection of epic poems spanning 40 years of writing by one of America’s most controversial poets, Ezra Pound. The most studied and well-known section is the Pisan Cantos, which were written by the poet during his wartime incarceration following the American liberation of Italy. The Pisan Cantos are also significant for their inclusion of Chinese characters and other non-English languages in the core of the texts. Forcing the reader to address the ideas of expression and cultural understanding. With only three books permitted during his detention Pound selected a text by Confucius in the original language, a translation to English of the same text and a Chinese dictionary.
The Pisan Cantos are notable for their reliance on memory, particularly the literary and artistic circles once enjoyed by the poet in the early twentieth century. Zao Wou-Ki masterfully blended traditional Chinese expressionism with Western European abstraction to produce his important ‘Canto Pisan’. Eight magnificent etchings and aquatints with expressive and tonal colouring. With this series Wou-Ki continued his ongoing union of eastern and western ideas, finding a common visual language.

FRANZ MARC 1880-1916
Munich 1880 – 1916 Verdun (German)
Title: The Bull | Der Stier, 1912
Technique: Original Woodcut on tissue thin Japan Paper
Image size: 16 x 22 cm. / 6.3 x 8.7 in.
Additional Information: This woodcut by Franz Marc is hand signed in pencil by the artist’s wife “Maria Marc”, verso. The paper also bears the violet inkstamp, verso “Handdruck vom Originalholzstock bastaetigt:” (Lugt 1782 b) that confirms that work has been printed by hand. It was printed for inclusion in December edition of the third year of “Der Sturm” in 1912. The composition served as the frontispiece for this edition. Other impressions of this work can be found in the Städtische Galerie im Lenbachhaus und Kunstbau München and the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart.
Note: Franz Marc and the scarcity of his surviving works are considered quite precious amongst collectors of German Expressionism. The artist was killed in action during the battle of Verdun in 1916. He volunteered in 1914 to fight for the German Imperial Army and became a cavalryman. Incredibly, despite the circumstances, he kept his artistic skills in check by painting camouflage for artillery positions. In a letter to his wife, the artist Maria Marc, he recounted how he had completed nine such canvas coverings in the styles of artists like Manet and Kandinsky, this was in an effort to deduce which was the more successful in creating the illusion – he settled on a pointillist style for the rest. This composition is directly related to one of the artist’s most celebrated paintings, Der Stier [The Bull] from the previous year, held by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York
