Original Hand Signed, Dated, Numbered and Titled Etching in Grey and Black on Arches Wove Paper
Paper size: 40 x 34.2 cm. / 15.5 x 13.5 in.
Image size: 15 x 13.8 cm. / 5.9 x 5.4 in.
This original etching in grey and black is hand signed in pencil by the artist “Auerbach” at the lower right margin.
It is also dated ‘80’ [1980] next to the signature.
It is numbered from the edition of 50, in the lower left margin and titled ‘R.B. Kitaj’ in the centre of the lower margin. There were also ten artist’s proofs.
It was printed by Terry Wilson at Palm Tree Studios, London and published by Bernard Jacobson, London in 1981.
The paper bears the blindstamp of the printer in the lower left margin.
Other impressions of this subject can be found in the collections of The Britiish Museum, London and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.

Note: This was the first series of etchings undertaken by Auerbach with the inspiration for the sitters coming from his friends and family. The series consists of portraits of Julia Auerbach, Gerda Boehm, Lucian Freud, Leon Kossof, Joe Tilson and R.B. Kitaj.

Condition: Very good condition. Very pale time-staining around the image. A pinpoint foxmark in the lower left sheet. Remnants of hinging tape, verso.
